Top Crop Awards
On the 18th of May, more than 300 poppy growers gathered at the Launceston Grand Chancellor for the annual Tasmanian Alkaloids Grower Presentation Luncheon.
Field Operations Supervisor Tom Radcliff said "this annual event is an important get together to review the past seasons results, celebrate the top performing crops and discuss future developments."
The past season has been very challenging for growers with new records for warm and dry weather across the poppy growing regions in Tasmania. Irrigation capacity and resources were put under pressure and it is a credit to the growers that above budget yields and high quality straw was delivered to the factory.
Doug Blackaby, Managing Director, thanked the growers and the Tasmanian Alkaloids team for their patience and commitment during what was a challenging but ultimately successful season. He also discussed the crop size for this coming season, highlighting some of the global challenges facing the industry: “Despite these challenges Tasmanian Alkaloids and our sister company Noramco is well positioned to maintain its current position and build market share. The global industry is typically one that is cyclic and history has shown that it recovers well.”
Dr Les Baxter, Director of Agricultural R&D, gave a presentation of past and possible future agricultural breakthroughs.
The Top Growers for each variety were:
- Thebaine - Greenhill Bros - Northdown
- Codeine - TC & AJ House - Forest
- Oripavine - Woodburn Pastoral Co - Wynyard
